Curriculum Intent

At Christ the King Catholic Primary School, our aim is to provide rich, meaningful learning experiences that inspire success across every area of the curriculum while nurturing each child’s personal, emotional, and spiritual development. Our Christian values sit at the heart of everything we do. We strive to equip all children with the skills, knowledge, and cultural capital they need to thrive in the wider world, guided by our ‘3-5-7’ ethos, our Catholic identity, our holistic approach to education, and our commitment to preparing pupils for life in the 21st century.

Our curriculum journey begins in Early Years, where children learn through a rich blend of structured teaching and purposeful play across seven key developmental areas. As pupils move into Year 1, we use the Early Excellence model to ensure a smooth, developmentally appropriate transition from Early Years to more formal learning.

Across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum and shaped by our school’s distinct vision. We believe that strong, secure knowledge underpins the development of effective skills—for instance, fluency in number bonds and times tables empowers pupils to confidently tackle increasingly complex mathematical challenges. Our curriculum is fully inclusive and accessible to all, in line with the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Regulations 2014.

To ensure deep and lasting learning, each subject is taught through carefully sequenced units that break down big concepts into smaller, manageable components. This structured progression helps pupils build strong subject knowledge, make meaningful connections, and retain what they have learned over time. Direct instruction is a core part of our teaching approach and provides clarity and consistency for all staff.

Language development is central to our curriculum. Many pupils join us with limited vocabulary or speaking experience, so developing strong oracy skills is a priority across all subjects. We aim for children to communicate confidently and articulate their learning clearly. Early reading, vocabulary development, and high-quality phonics teaching are key drivers of success across the curriculum.

Our inclusive vision is reflected in our targeted support for disadvantaged pupils, guided by our Pupil Premium Strategy with a focus on reading, vocabulary, and communication. Pupils with SEND benefit from tailored support that equips them with the knowledge and skills needed for future learning.

We are committed to laying Strong Foundations from Nursery to Year 2, ensuring that all children develop secure early language, reading, writing, and mathematical skills. This strong start underpins later learning and sets children up for long-term success.

We also enhance learning through a wide range of cultural, creative, and real-world experiences, both local and national. These opportunities build confidence, broaden horizons, and enrich pupils’ understanding of the world.

SMSC development is embedded throughout our curriculum—not only in PSHCE and RE, but through sport, the arts, performance opportunities, community projects, and early exposure to the world of work. These experiences help build resilience, confidence, and strength of character.

Ultimately, our curriculum aims to develop compassionate, thoughtful, well-rounded young people who embody British Values and contribute positively to society.
