Privately fostered children are cared for by someone other than a parent or close relative (eg step-parents, siblings, siblings of a parent and grandparents) for 28 days or more. 

Staff understand that the school has a mandatory responsibility to inform the Local Authority by making a referral to Children’s Social Care if:

• They are informed that a child is in or will be in a private fostering arrangement.
• They become aware of a current private fostering arrangement.
• They have doubts about whether a child’s carers are actually their parents, and there is evidence to support these doubts, whether or not there are concerns about the child’s welfare
