Christ the King Catholic Primary School

Music

Music is a big part of school life at Christ The King, both in our set lessons and in the celebration of our faith. Music is taught by Mr Howarth from the EYFS up to 6, using the scheme Charanga. Miss Oliver is the Music Leader in the school. Children have the opportunity to sing and also experiment with instruments in a group and independently. Children learn key musical vocabulary when listening to and appraising different genres of music. In particular, children will learn about diversity in music through studying genres and musicians from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In year 3, the children will learn recorder and in year 5, the children will learn viola. Children in year 6 will also have the opportunity to build upon their viola skills from the previous year, through taking part in an ensemble group run by Music Education Islington.

Music is also celebrated through our weekly hymn practises, our visits to the Church to celebrate feast days and also our class Masses. We also showcase the children’s talents through our Summer Extravaganza. This academic year, we will also be holding a ‘Write Your Own Rap’ competition, where children will develop their skills of composition and performance.

The Christ The King Choir consists of children in Year 4-6 and we perform at large events each year such as: The Thames Festival, Young Voices at the O2 and concerts with Music Education Islington.

Music related school trips are also important, and include trips to see members of the London Symphony Orchestra perform at St Luke’s Church, and workshops at City, University of London.
